Joining OAR as either a beginner or as an experienced rower requires:
USRowing annual Basic membership. An annual Basic USRowing membership and accompanying waiver is required for OAR membership. Fees are currently $25 for the first year and $20 when renewed.
Float Test. Members must successfully complete Float Tests with a certified Lifeguard in order to be a member of the club and get out on the water. Float Tests may be scheduled by calling the Briggs YMCA, or other swim facility that has certified lifeguard staff. You MUST have the attending lifeguard complete and sign your printed float test form. You may then upload the completed form to iCrew.
OAR uses an app called ICrew for registrations, payments, session sign ups, and boat reservations. Once you have registered in ICrew following one of the paths outlined below, your USRowing membership and float test form can be uploaded into your account.
New Rowers. Sign up for one of the many Learn to Row classes offered Spring through Summer. Alternatively, take 3-5 private lessons to get started. Once you have the basic skills down, you are eligible to join!
Experienced rowers: Coordinate with the OAR Captain to do a trial row. Once you have demonstrated the basic skills of safely launching, rowing, and docking, you will be eligible to join the club and to check-out single sculls on your own. Alternatively, you may also do 3 guest rows with the coached adult team. To arrange your 3 guest rows please contact our membership coordinator. For either option, you will need to bring with you printed, completed copies of USRowing’s Waiver (search for 'waiver' to get the current version) and OAR’s Participation Agreement. If after you have completed one of these options you'd like to take the next step, please email our membership coordinator for a membership registration link.
OAR is a volunteer-led non-profit organization. Members are expected to contribute their time, skills, and energy for the good of the club. We ask for 12 volunteer hours per year, however, we understand that adults can be busy and offer an opt-out of volunteer commitments by paying an annual $200 fee on top of regular membership. Unrealized volunteer hours will be billed at the end of the year. Members who have joined during the current year are exempt, but we would love to get to know you better at volunteer events anyway!
