OAR’s mission is to promote the sport of rowing in the Olympia community by fostering sportsmanship, teamwork, athleticism, and camaraderie. Whenever financially possible, OAR works to reduce barriers that might prevent participation.

The Gretchen Steiger Scholarship Fund

Gretchen Steiger was a beloved friend, teammate, and coach whose passion for rowing, sportsmanship, and community touched countless lives. A lifelong athlete and enthusiastic supporter of many sports, she brought energy, dedication, and joy to every team she joined.

After her passing in 2019, the Gretchen Steiger Scholarship Fund was created to honor her legacy and commitment to expanding athletic opportunities. The fund provides financial support to help athletes pursue their passion for rowing, making the sport more accessible to youth and families.

Scholarship opportunities are now available for qualifying families, and we encourage aspiring rowers to apply. Gretchen’s legacy lives on each time a new athlete takes to the water with the same determination and joy she brought to every race.
