OLYMPIA AREA ROWING HIGH SCHOOLERS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS
Capital High School Senior Stella Willoughby and Olympia High School Junior Ashley Lane, representing Olympia Area Rowing, rowed a double scull to second place at the USRowing Northwest Junior Championship Regatta in Vancouver, Wash., on Sunday, May 22.
The second place finish in the women’s Varsity Double Scull event means automatic qualification for the USRowing Youth National Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., June 10-12. It will be Willoughby’s second trip to Nationals, having rowed in the women’s Varsity Single event in 2010 after placing first at the 2010 Junior Regionals.
Twenty boys and 16 girls who are OAR juniors, both novices and experienced rowers, participated in the three-day event with high school and club teams from throughout the Northwest states.
While the top three winning boats from each top varsity event qualify for nationals, Olympia’s athletes who competed in novice and junior varsity events also won medals of note:
Julian Bennett-Ponsford and Peter Meisenheimer earned a first place medal in the Men’s Third Varsity Double event
Beth Capra Smith and Cosima Landis earned second place in the Women’s Third Varsity Double event
