Volunteering
Wash a towel, bake a lasagna...
There are many ways that rowers -- and rowers' parents -- can help the club. Here are a few:
Towel fairies
- if you see a pile of wet towels hanging from the drying line down at the boathouse, fill a laundry basket, take them home, wash and dry them and bring them back, and you will be doing all of the rowers a great service.
Boathouse Clean-up Day
- once or twice a year, we ask rowers (and any family members they drag along) to come down and help clean and tidy the boathouse, dock and launches. Many hands make the work go fast and it's a great way to meet other rowers, especially if you're new to the club!
Regatta Chefs
- parents of the junior rowers usually volunteer to cook one or two meals at a regatta when the kids are racing. There have been some fabulous meals prepared at these events, and the kids really appreciate their parents' involvement. The coaches usually do the "ask," so if your son or daughter comes home talking about an upcoming regatta, this is your cue to be ready to say yes, if asked. Or, better yet, offer
before
the ask -- a sure way to make the coaches ecstatically happy. The kids really appreciate it, too!
Club potlucks at OAR events
- making and bringing food to OAR events will make rowers happy and you very popular with them! We do a potluck after the annual Salmon & the Seal event in the fall, including delicious salmon(!) so side dishes, appetizers, desserts -- really anything that's edible -- we encourage you to be creative in feeding this crowd! The fans get to eat, too, by the way, so the more food, the better.
OAR Annual Banquet
- we can always use help at the annual banquet. From cooking spaghetti to setting up (and setting) tables, to managing the event...it's all done by wonderful volunteers contributing their time and organizational skills (or strong backs).
Gear Orders
- we need someone to organize clothes and uniform orders—this is not a particularly time-consuming task, but goes in ‘spurts’ and requires some organizational skills. This would be a good job for someone relatively new to the club!
Publicity
- got writing skills or know someone in the local media? We'd like to improve publicity about OAR in the wider community. Tasks would include:
Press releases to newspapers when we have great news, especially about success at regattas
Connecting with local high schools and middle school to promote the Junior program
Publicizing OAR through staffing tables at the market and at community events
There is an expectation that every member commit to a minimum of 12 hours per year in service to the club. This helps the club function well, and keeps costs down. The club is completely volunteer-run, and the tasks and roles that keep the club going smoothly are numerous. So, we ask that every member take some responsibility and initiative, and find the volunteer niche that best suits them.
Please contact Lisa Iverson lisaiverson@comcast.net if you have questions or are interested in taking on any of these tasks for the benefit of OAR.
If you don't have a lot of time to volunteer, but would like to help the club in another way as well, there's always the
Wish List...
spending $$ on items for the club is much-needed and appreciated, too.
